Open Interpreter is an open-source Rust coding agent designed to extract stronger performance from lower-cost AI models. Its harness-switching system can emulate workflows associated with Claude Code, Kimi Code, Qwen Code, DeepSeek TUI, SWE-agent and other coding-agent environments — using the same base model.
The idea: the MODEL is raw reasoning; the HARNESS is the operating system around it (plan, edit, test, recover, repeat). Pair a cheap model with the right harness and you get premium-workflow behavior at a fraction of the cost.
At a glance:
• openinterpreter/openinterpreter · 66,137 stars · Rust · Apache-2.0
• 10 harnesses swappable via /harness
• Native sandboxing, MCP, skills, hooks, permissions, AGENTS.md
• Codex SDK compatible · ACP protocol · Kimi K3 provider-recommended
The money play: route routine work (refactors, tests, doc updates) to a cheap model in a strong harness. Save premium models for novel architecture and hard multi-file debugging.
